Illustrating the Indigenous Knowledge of Uncle Greg Simms.
-
To produce a zine which visually adapts ‘The White Man’s Thumb’ — a story told by Uncle Greg Simms, an Elder and knowledge holder, Gadigal, Darug, Gundungurra and Yuin man.
-
I spent time reflecting on the emotion that comes attatched to the story itself. Uncle Greg made it clear that his childhood experience at La Perouse was not an experience of choice but rather an experience of immense conditioning and humiliation.
-
To materialise the story, I decided to create a set of character illustrations that represent the overpowering behaviour of managers from the mission through their bloated dark appearance. The smaller character represents a contrast to the manager as well as the way that Uncle Greg was made to feel small in his experience.
