Climate change isn’t just a problem of our future — it’s here.

  • To design a knowledge object that utilises the information drawn from an episode of the Powerhouse Museum’s ‘100 Climate Conversations’ Podcast. I chose the episode ‘the art of constructive conversations’ featuring Rebecca Huntley.

  • Rebecca Huntley’s research suggests that an object of care can be used to galvanise climate action — something which is needed when shifting someone’s position.

  • I landed on the creation of a zine targeted towards the local surfers of my own tight-knit community of East Corrimal, a small beach town just outside of Wollongong. The design features a timeline of the impact of climate change on surfing which includes the present and extends up until 2075.

According to a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, sea level rise is accelerating faster than previously thought. If it continues its acceleration, one of the many results of rapidly rising oceans will be the remaking of coastlines, and surf spots, all over the planet.

We will still surf, but most of the spots we know will be radically changed. Many will be gone. Surfing, as we know it today, will soon be a thing of the past. By using surf as an object of care, I have been able to start meaningful conversations with locals about their position and contributions to climate action.
